Textile Designers

Textile designers are responsible for the creation of fabric designs for woven, knitted and printed fabrics used to make clothing, interior furnishings and other textile products.

As a textile designer, your key duties would include:

• making initial sketches by hand or on the computer
• using different techniques to produce patterns and designs
• modifying designs until they fulfill the customer’s requirements
• producing samples yourself or getting them prepared by textile technicians
• researching design trends and patterns to determine consumer demand
• liaising with clients, technical, marketing and purchasing staff
• working closely with colleagues as part of a design team
• printing and dyeing fabrics by hand
• marketing your own work at exhibitions, fairs, galleries or shops
