YEP – Youth Employment Project

YEP is a three year UNDP initiative to create better livelihood and employment opportunities for youth and women in the local garment/home textile industry through skills development and training. The project aims to train 13,000 youth of Karachi.

Employment and entrepreneurial facilitation is the fundamental element of the project.

iACT is an implementation partner to provide free of cost skills training in the following areas:

  • Basic Dress Making
  • Fashion Designing
  • Industrial Stitching
  • Pattern Making

Objectives

UNDP’s Youth Employment Project is expected to reduce the risk of armed violence by investing in the skills development, employment opportunities and better service delivery.

Outcomes

  • Skills developed and employment generated for over 100 youth, including women, in the garment industry.
  • Capacity building of iACT to provide training in textile/garment industry related skills.

GPATI

The Germany-Pakistan Training Initiative (GPATI) is an initiative of The German Consulate to initiate a vocational training scheme in Pakistan, based on the famous concept of the Dual Training System which is internationally successful. The project will focus on youth in Pakistan to facilitate them on better career possibilities for their sustainable economic and social development.

The Institute for Advancing Careers and Talents (iACT) is a partner institute to manage the commercial trainings in coordination with German International Cooperation (GIZ), relevant employers and The German Consulate.

Objectives

The purpose of the GPATI program is to implement a pilot cooperative training scheme for German companies operating in Pakistan. On successful completion, the program will be replicated and extended to other multi-national companies and will also be used by TEVTA for Pakistani Companies.

The program also aims at creating quality training and employment opportunities for Pakistani youth

and facilitating the Vocational Training System of Pakistan in diversifying its current training framework for better learning and employment outcomes.

iACT is a Training partner for following Commercial Courses of GPATI:

  1. Logistic & Supply Chain Assistant
  2. Retail Assistant
  3. Customer Support and Sales (Newly Launched)

Outcomes

  • Total no of youth targeted: 80
  • Duration of project: 22 months

INSPYRE

INSPYRE - Inspiring Pakistani Youth to Reach Excellence through Counseling and Training in Sindh is the project of Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sindh and is being implemented by Habib University Foundation (H.U.F.) at Institute for Advancing Careers and Talents (iACT) with the technical support from British Council. It offers Free Career and Skill based Professional Courses, Career Counseling and Entrepreneurial Trainings

Objectives

INSPYRE is an innovative youth development program that aims at providing the youth with a platform for their personal growth, economic and social development. The program is designed to provide free training opportunities to youth of Sindh. INSPYRE is being implemented since May 2009 at Institute for Advancing Careers and Talents (iACT) which is an initiative of Habib University Foundation (H.U.F.) and City Government of Karachi.

In order to continue the facilitation, INSPYRE phase II - July 2012 to June 2015 - has been launched with enhanced portfolio of eight program areas and new locations. INSPYRE will be facilitating youth collectively in the Districts of Hyderabad, MirpurKhas, Larkana and Sukkur via offering various skill building programs under service sector.

Outcomes 

INSPYRE has facilitated 467 youth (Male: 234 and Female: 233) from all over Sindh during its first phase from August 2009 to June 2012 under program areas of Call Center, Retail Management, Digital Media, IT, Fashion and Textile Designing.  

It has also facilitated:

  • Construction of library, digital media lab, photography room and a seminar hall at iACT
  • Internship and job placement of 190 students
  • Development of Entrepreneurship Program-Bean Entrepreneur
  • 20 students initiated their business successfully

iLEAD

iLEAD - Inspiring Leadership, Empowerment and Development in Youth is a public-private partnership project between the Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sindh and Habib University Foundation (H.U.F.) with technical support being provided by the British Council. This project aims to facilitate the Youth of Pakistan to develop interpersonal skills, leadership qualities and active citizenship, through sports and communityservice. 

Objectives

iLEAD completed its pilot phase from 2009-2012. The key objectives of the project were:

  • To design a National Sports Curriculum and promote sports as a co-curriculum activity in schools and colleges
  • To facilitate leadership and personal development of young people through sports
  • To foster cross cultural understanding, tolerance and respect for diversity
  • To create active citizenship and responsibility through community service and community development
  • To create opportunities for youth to train for national and international sports

Districts in Focus were Karachi and Hyderabad

The current phase (2012-2015) focuses on targeting the following objectives:

  • Facilitating youth to enhance their knowledge, skills and values to nurture healthy minds and healthy bodies through the curriculum on ‘Nurturing Healthy Minds and Bodies.
  • Creating opportunities for children and youth to acquire basic physical fitness and sports skills (i.e. Fundamental Movement and Motor Skills) essential to participate in various sports through the EnergActive Program.
  • Enabling youth to take a leadership role for promoting a healthy and active life style through community sports and health awareness events.
  • Fostering cross cultural understanding, tolerance and respect for diversity. 

Districts in Focus are MirpurKhas, Larkana, Sukkur, Hyderabad and Karachi

Outcomes

2009-2013

  • 57 partner institutes facilitated for sports curriculum
  • 3400 youth facilitated through sports curriculum
  • 15718 children and youth facilitated through sports events, competitions, galas, coaching camps, community events

2013-2015

  • 25 partner institutes (teachers) will be facilitated to learn and implement sports curriculum
  • 2500 youth will be facilitated by teachers during curriculum implementation phase
  • 3900 children and youth will be facilitated in multiple sports event (tournaments, coaching camps, sports gala etc.)

YES

Youth Empowering Spaces (YES) is a project of Habib University Foundation (H.U.F.) being implemented in collaboration with Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sindh. YES seeks to facilitate youth with key knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to aspire for a Healthy and Productive Life.

Youth in Pakistan is blessed with enormous potential which could be channelized by providing them a platform of healthy and productive activities leading to theirpersonal, technological, social and learning empowerment. YES – Youth Empowering Spaces aims to give youth this essential platform.

Objectives

YES believes in facilitating youth to empower themselves for carving their life paths with complete self-awareness, confidence and conscious thinking about their environment in order to live a healthy and productive life. YES has identified a ‘Three E’ framework to facilitate youth to gain empowerment. These three Es form the three core objectives of YES.

YES facilitates Pakistani youth to:

Educate themselves about issues affecting their lives and their societies and explore ways to deal with them.

Enlighten themselves with the capacity and talents they possess to bring a positive change in themselves as well as to have a constructive impact onthe society.

Engage themselves in constructive, creative and challenging activities to stimulate their hearts and minds for a healthy and productive life.

Key Foci / Themes YES focuses on four key areas which are identified as YES themes

Theme 1: Personal Development and Empowerment:

YES offers specially designed courses and seminars on “Nurturing and ExploringSelf” and organizes innovative learning camps and festivals to create spaces for youth to demonstrate and diversify their talents and skills.

Theme 2: Technology for Innovation and Empowerment:

YES facilitates young people to understand and use technology as anempowering tool for their personal, social and economic lives. It specially helps young people to boost their imagination and livelihood by creating innovative digital applications.

Theme 3: Raising Awareness and Consciousness:

YES encourages youth to think critically about the issues affecting their lives suchas environmental challenges, the influence of media, culture of consumerism etc. and responds to them through thoughtful actions.

Theme 4: Health and Career Information and Guidance:

YES supports youth to take informed decisions about their own health,academics and careers by acquiring information and guidance through YES Career Seminar Series, YES Health Forums, YES Mentors and YES Career Resource Center. 

Outcomes

Since YES is one of its kind initiative and is a platform for youth, whereby youth can join and work with YES, the core of empowerment and taking ownership for self-development lies on the youth.  The more youth participates and contributes to various activities, the more empowerment they acquire through a process of self-reflection.

In terms of quantified outcomes, YES seeks to provide a diverse range of activities to 7000 youth in the implementation districts - Karachi, Dadu, Khairpur and Jamshoro.
