Fashion Designers

As a fashion designer, you could work in high fashion (called ‘haute couture’), designer ready-to-wear and high-street fashion. You would specialize further in one of these areas for instance sportswear, men’s wear or children’s wear. You would probably start your career as a design assistant and move towards your own independent business after some work experience.

As a fashion designer, you would be performing the following tasks:

• finding and liaising with suppliers
• analyzing and/or predicting fashion trends (colors, patterns, shapes)
• producing concept and mood boards
• making patterns
• estimating manufacturing and material costs
• supervising the creation of sample garments
• making sure the patterns are reproduced according to the designs
• making presentations for instance to merchandisers
